It's a question as old as time, or at least as old as fireside campouts, hot chocolate, and every other memory you have involving squishy joy: exactly how are marshmallows made to be so light, fluffy, and utterly irresistible?
Well, for starters, most marshmallows are made using a base of sugar and corn syrup, with a drop of gelatin. Those bits and pieces are boiled together, and whipped into an airy concoction once they reach the right heat. All of which is fine, but here's the key bit. Free From Fellows Vegan Marshmallows don't follow that recipe, because, as our name suggests, we go our own way. That means avoiding anything that isn’t natural. It's just not in our nature.
Here at Free From Fellows HQ, our aim has always been to make sweet treats that are appealing to everyone. That means they never trigger any allergies by swerving ingredients such as nuts, soya, wheat and gluten, and we never use animal products. Which is exactly why everything that comes out of our HQ tastes wonderfully guilt-free.
How are our Vegan Mallows made?
So, how are our Vegan Marshmallows made? Like all the best things in life, there's clearly more than a little magic happening in our manufacturing department, not to mention an awful lot of skill and technical talent. And we're more than happy to share this with you.
First, we take a blend of water, sugar, syrup and carrageenan — that's a red seaweed extract some people refer to as Irish Moss, which is native to our homeland, the British Isles. We cook this base mixture together, and then add a foaming agent. Which is where our vegan marshmallows get their light and fluffy texture from. Or, as the experts call it: aeration.
Next, we add natural flavours and colours to these marshmallows-in-the-making. Of course, as Free From Fellows we only use natural flavourings and colours in all our products, and Vegan Marshmallows are absolutely no different. This means you can rest assured there will be nothing hitting your taste buds that doesn't sit right in your stomach, or fit in with your moral compass and lifestyle choices. It really is that simple.
OK, now the mixture is ready we need to extrude it into the right shape. Contrary to popular belief, Free From Fellows Vegan Mallows don't start off as cute little buttons of squishy joy. Instead, we lovingly turn a mass of goodness into small, bite-sized pieces using some specialist equipment, cutting each batch so it has the look you know and love, and love to know. It's around this point we also apply a special coating to the outside, preventing the product from sticking.
Finally, every morsel is then allowed to cool down at ambient room temperature, in its own time, without any pressure or rush. After all, as the age old saying goes, good things come to those who wait. Thankfully, that doesn't take too long, meaning Free From Fellows Vegan Mallows are ready to be eaten straight from the packet, or used in any number of delicious sweet treat recipes, almost as soon as we've finished the cooking process.
Free From Fellows are available to buy at Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Holland & Barrett, Ocado and good independent health stores.
